Surgery day

Well, today was the day I've been dreading/looking forward to for months!

We had to be at Rady's at 5:30 am for registration. Surgery didn't start until 7:30 am, and the registration process took about 15 minutes so I'm pretty sure we could have shown up at 7:00 am and gotten some extra sleep (I've been up since 3:30 am!). Anyway, we got to the hospital around 5:15 am and did a lot of waiting in the waiting room. The nurse finally called us back and took Kylie's vitals. She took us to a "room" (which wasn't a room but more of an area with a curtain around it), and we talked to another nurse, the anesthesiologist, and the surgeon. A 3rd nurse came, we kissed and said goodbye to Kylie, and she carried Kylie to the operating room. That was one of the hardest moments in my life! Just the unknown of it all...not knowing if she was going to be ok, especially after the anesthesiologist talked to us about the possible complications with breathing (like I mentioned in the last blog), not knowing what to expect Kylie to look like or act after surgery, not knowing how to take care of a baby who just had surgery, etc.

The surgery lasted about an hour and then we went to a consultation room to talk to Dr. Kling about the surgery. She told us the hernia on the right side (the one we knew about) was large and very irritated and that she found another hernia on the left side when she did the exploratory. So she repaired them both, and Kylie has matching incisions on each side!

When Kylie woke up from the anesthesia, we were allowed to go back into the recovery area to see her and hold her. She was really groggy and a little fussy but quickly perked up and started squealing, talking, and moving all around (her abdomen was still numb). After a nurse monitored her for about half an hour in the recovery area, we were discharged. We left the hospital about 10:00 am, and Kylie has slept most of the time since we've been home.

In the waiting room.

About to go into the operating room.

Drinking some apple juice right after surgery.

She stared at me like this almost the whole way home.
